“We were asked deliver the first ever live party in the sky with 18 hot air balloons in Cappadocia, Turkey. The brief was to deliver high-quality live stereo audio to the hot air balloons, with one acting as a stage while the other 17 are provided a live event experience.
Following our own research and communications with RF specialists, we chose to work with the wireless equipment manufacturer, Shure for their industry standard rock-solid wireless equipment. It worked flawlessly and with in-depth logistics and planning, we were able to deliver a party in the sky well over a 2km radius.
Following advisory sessions with Shure, we set up UK ground test equipment, consisting of the following equipment: Shure PSM1000 transmitter operating at 50mW power Output (16.9dBm). This passed through a 3dBm attenuator in order to supply a 1Watt booster with the optimal signal strength. This resulted in 18dBm output from the antenna. The decision was made to use a Shure UA860SWB omni directional dipole reception pattern antenna to cover the widest possible area from one transmitter. To receive the audio we used the P10R+ packs with SMA to BNC adapters which enabled external antennas to be fitted for additional reliability and range.
For absolute redundancy, we setup backup frequencies with a second Shure PSM100 unit putting each P10R+ pack into engineer mode which enabled pilots to switch very quickly should they receive interference or drops out. This was never used.“
